The New York Yankees are grappling with a significant injury blow as infielder Jon Berti is set to be sidelined for an extended period due to a “high-grade” calf strain. The injury occurred during the ninth inning of Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres when Berti was running out of the batter’s box.

Following an MRI on Saturday, the Yankees are consulting with medical professionals to determine the exact duration of Berti’s absence. However, manager Aaron Boone has already indicated that it will be a considerable time before Berti returns. “It’s going to be a while,” he stated.

Berti’s injury compounds the Yankees’ infield challenges, as he had only recently returned from a groin strain. His presence at third base had been crucial, especially in the absence of Dj LeMahieu, who has been sidelined with a calf injury of his own. Berti, seen on crutches and wearing a walking boot, had been splitting time at third base with Oswaldo Cabrera, providing stability and defensive prowess.

LeMahieu set to return against Angels

LeMahieu is expected to return to the lineup on Tuesday for the series against the Los Angeles Angels, a timely boost for the Yankees given Berti’s injury. LeMahieu’s return will be vital for the Yankees as they look to maintain their competitive edge in a tightly contested season. However, the team will need to carefully manage their infield depth and rotations to cover for Berti’s extended absence.

In other roster moves, pitcher Ian Hamilton’s activation from the COVID-19 injured list has been pushed to Tuesday. This delay is intended to give the team time to make necessary roster adjustments, including optioning Yoendrys Gomez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Sunday’s game. Hamilton’s return is eagerly anticipated as the Yankees seek to bolster their pitching staff amid ongoing injuries and rotation changes.

Additionally, manager Aaron Boone addressed a notable incident from Saturday’s game involving Juan Soto and home plate umpire Bill Miller. Soto had expressed frustration with Miller’s enforcement of the league mandate to expedite batter timeouts. Boone clarified that while the mandate aims to maintain the pace of play, communication and consistency in enforcement are key to its success.

Yankees injuries and roster adjustments continue

In a minor league transaction, the Yankees have received right-handed pitcher Matt Sauer back from the Kansas City Royals as a Rule 5 draft return. Sauer, who struggled with a 7.71 ERA in 14 games this season, will be assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. This move provides Sauer an opportunity to refine his skills and work towards a potential future contribution to the major league team.

The Yankees continue to navigate a season marked by injuries and roster adjustments. With key players like Berti and LeMahieu facing health challenges, the team’s depth and resilience will be tested. Boone remains optimistic about the team’s ability to adapt and compete at a high level, emphasizing the importance of each player stepping up to fill the gaps left by injured teammates.

The upcoming series against the Angels will be a crucial test for the Yankees as they aim to sustain their momentum and solidify their standing in the league. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team adjusts to these recent setbacks and what strategies Boone employs to keep the Yankees in contention.

As the season progresses, the health and performance of the Yankees’ roster will play a pivotal role in their quest for success. The team’s ability to manage injuries, make effective roster decisions, and maintain a high level of play will be essential in navigating the challenges ahead.
