Marcus Stroman delivered an impressive performance on the mound, spinning four scoreless innings against a formidable Orioles lineup. Despite his efforts, the New York Yankees couldn’t muster enough offensive support and succumbed to a 7-3 defeat against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.

Stroman shines vs. Orioles

Stroman initiated the game with a commanding 1-2-3 inning, inducing a groundout, a flyout, and a pop-out. Although Ryan O’Hearn managed a single to kick off the second inning, Stroman swiftly orchestrated a double play and then struck out Coby Mayo to quell any threats.

Throughout the game, Stroman exhibited precision, consistently hitting the gloveside edge of the plate with his sinkers and slurves, frustrating the Orioles’ right-handed batters. His pitch arsenal featured sharp, late movement, unsettling the Baltimore lineup and resulting in uncomfortable at-bats. Stroman’s dominance translated into a stat line devoid of walks, with just two singles surrendered and three strikeouts earned over his four innings of work.

While Stroman shone brightly, the Yankees’ offense struggled to gain traction against Orioles pitcher Cole Irvin. Anthony Volpe emerged as a bright spot, notching two hits in three at-bats, including a leadoff single to ignite the game and another base hit in the third inning.

However, the Orioles’ power surge in the middle innings proved pivotal. Cody Morris, who relieved Stroman, faced immediate challenges as Austin Hays launched a home run on just his fifth pitch. Morris encountered further trouble in the sixth inning, allowing a two-run double to Ryan Mountcastle, expanding the Orioles’ lead to 3-0.

Subsequent relief efforts by Nick Ramirez failed to stifle the Orioles’ offense, as Hays capitalized with a two-run single and Kyle Stowers hammered a two-run homer, extending Baltimore’s advantage to 7-0.

Despite a late surge in the ninth inning, highlighted by Jahmai Jones scoring on a sacrifice fly from Caleb Durbin and Brandon Lockridge’s two-run single, the Yankees fell short, unable to overcome the Orioles’ lead.

Individual performances from Josh Breaux, Jeter Downs, and Lockridge injected some energy into the Yankees’ offense, but it wasn’t enough to alter the game’s outcome.

Looking ahead, the Yankees continue their spring training campaign against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, with hopes of rebounding from their setback against the Orioles. Nestor Cortes is set to take the mound for the Yankees, while the Tigers will counter with Matt Manning in what promises to be an intriguing matchup at GMS, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET.
