NEW YORK — Jazz Chisholm Jr. finished the Yankees’ season trying to help erase a one-run deficit after watching someone else start at second base. By the time the clubhouse opened Wednesday night, his place in the lineup had become a question about his future.

The Yankees lost 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium, completing a three-game American League Division Series sweep. Victor Mesa Jr.’s two-run homer off Max Fried in the sixth inning supplied the decisive runs in a game New York never led.

Chisholm entered in the seventh as a pinch hitter for Jose Caballero. Aaron Boone had started Anthony Volpe at second base, leaving the pending free agent with a reduced role in the Yankees’ most important game of the year. Chisholm finished 0-for-2.

That combination gave his final night added significance. The Yankees must weigh his offensive decline against the speed and production he has previously supplied. Chisholm, meanwhile, left the season facing the possibility that his next opportunity to start regularly will come with another MLB club.

A benching puts Chisholm’s Yankees future in focus

Volpe went 2-for-4 and nearly changed the game in the sixth. His apparent two-run homer became an RBI double after replay identified spectator interference. George Lombard Jr. scored, but the Yankees remained a run behind. Chisholm entered the following inning with that deficit intact.

The lineup decision followed Chisholm’s throwing error during Monday’s 5-2 loss at Tropicana Field. He learned he was sitting Wednesday from the posted lineup card, rather than a conversation with Boone beforehand. The Yankees were facing right-hander Nick Martinez, making this more than a routine decision to protect a left-handed hitter from a left-handed starter.

Volpe’s productive night gave the Yankees an immediate contribution from the player selected ahead of Chisholm. It also left the second baseman discussing his performance, his relationship with the crowd and his desire to return after an elimination game he did not start.

Chisholm questions boos, then points to Aaron Judge

Chisholm called the Yankees fans’ boos confusing after hearing them during introductions and following his seventh-inning foulout. He questioned why supporters would jeer a player attempting to keep their season alive.

His two chances came against the Rays’ bullpen. Griffin Jax retired him in the seventh, and Chisholm grounded into a fielder’s choice in the ninth.

Speaking after the loss, Chisholm challenged the timing of the reaction. The Yankees still had a chance to force Game 4 when he came off the bench.

“It’s the playoffs and we’re trying to win games. You’re booing a guy that’s trying to help the team win.”

Chisholm then invoked Aaron Judge while explaining that he understood the scrutiny in New York. His comparison acknowledged that even the Yankees captain has faced the crowd’s displeasure.

“I already understand New York fans. They’ve booed Aaron Judge before, who am I?”

The two remarks addressed different parts of the same exchange: Chisholm objected to the reaction during a playoff game while acknowledging he was not exempt from it. His comments did not include a claim that the boos caused his struggles.

Four steals cannot offset two postseason hits

Chisholm ended the postseason 2-for-11, a .182 average, with no home runs or RBIs and a .490 OPS. He stole four bases. His legs remained an asset even as his bat supplied little help for a Yankees lineup struggling to score.

Those four steals accounted for 40% of Chisholm’s 10 career postseason steals. His two hits represented about 12% of his 17 career postseason hits. The contrast shows how heavily his contribution this October depended on reaching base and running rather than producing hits.

His career postseason line now stands at .172 in 99 at-bats, with three home runs, three RBIs and a .538 OPS. Eleven at-bats this year are a small sample, but the broader October record also offers limited offensive production.

The regular season provided a longer view. Chisholm hit .231 with 19 home runs, 41 steals and a .711 OPS in 137 games. That followed an All-Star and Silver Slugger season in 2025, when he joined the 30-homer, 30-steal club.

Chisholm also acknowledged that his season had fallen below his own expectations. Asked to assess the year after the Yankees were eliminated, he offered a restrained evaluation.

“I don’t feel like I had a great year. It was a decent year.”

Chisholm still wants a Yankees return

Chisholm’s frustration with the crowd did not change his stated preference for free agency. He pointed to his childhood attachment to the Yankees and the accomplishments he had recorded in New York.

“I grew up as a Yankee fan. Being from the Bahamas, watching Derek Jeter. I loved my time as a Yankee. I had great times as a Yankee – had an All-Star year, had a Silver Slugger year. Who doesn’t want to stay with the team you have such great times with?”

The Yankees now have to decide how that history fits their next roster. Volpe’s start at second base showed an available alternative, but a single lineup choice does not establish the club’s offseason plan. Chisholm wants to return; his contract status leaves that outcome unresolved.
