NEW YORK — A six-run sixth inning settled the Yankees’ series against Boston. The roster behind that rally supplied another answer to a season of questions about how New York assembled its October team.

Cody Bellinger’s three-run homer capped the decisive inning Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees won 9-2, completed a two-game Wild Card Series sweep and advanced with contributions from established veterans and players developed inside the organization.

Max Fried earned the victory with six innings of one-run ball. Sonny Gray took the loss, and no pitcher recorded a save. Luis García Jr. opened the scoring with a fourth-inning homer, while Bellinger finished with four RBIs.

For Aaron Boone, the result offered more than a comfortable scoreboard. His Yankees lineup created runs through power, speed and productive outs. The pitching staff supplied enough innings to prevent the series from becoming a prolonged bullpen test.

A roster built through different routes delivers

The Yankees had won Tuesday’s opener 9-0 behind Cam Schlittler and Ben Rice. Schlittler struck out 10 across 6 1/3 scoreless innings. Rice homered twice and drove in six runs, according to Field Level Media’s game report.

Wednesday shifted the spotlight. Bellinger, retained in free agency, and García, acquired during the season, provided the home runs. Fried handled Boston’s lineup while the offense expanded a one-run lead into a seven-run cushion.

Spencer Jones helped start that separation by reaching on a wild-pitch strikeout after a successful replay challenge. Rookie George Lombard Jr. contributed an RBI single during the sixth, while Austin Wells delivered a sacrifice fly.

That combination made the celebration a setting for a broader assessment of the Yankees. Their postseason roster had produced consecutive wins through different contributors, with young players helping veterans finish the job. The next challenge was preserving that balance against Tampa Bay in a best-of-five series beginning Saturday.

Cole directs credit toward Cashman

During the clubhouse celebration, Gerrit Cole gave general manager Brian Cashman a public endorsement. Assessing the Yankees’ roster construction and available options, Cole said:

“You’ve got to go out and buy the tools,” Cole said via Chris Kirschner. The roster looks really good at this point. We’re very competitive, and we have a lot of different ways that we can beat you. A lot of credit goes to a lot of people in this building.”

Cole’s comments connected the players’ performance with the decisions that brought them together. His praise also extended beyond one executive, recognizing the larger operation supporting the roster.

Cashman re-signed Bellinger to a five-year, $162.5 million contract in January. He acquired García from Washington in August for four pitchers, according to Associated Press and Reuters reporting on those transactions.

The catcher decision requires more precision. The Yankees did not acquire Adley Rutschman, who instead joined Boston. But Cashman pursued him and could not meet Baltimore’s price, according to the AP’s deadline reporting. The outcome was not evidence that the Yankees never wanted him.

Wells remained part of the Yankees’ solution, giving the organization another internal contributor during the sweep.

The distinction matters when assessing Cashman’s work. The series highlighted players he retained and acquired, alongside a catcher he continued using after unsuccessful trade talks. Those are separate decisions, even when their outcomes converge in the same postseason matchup.

Original calculation shows two routes to 37 outs

The starting pitchers illustrate the roster balance behind Cole’s assessment. Schlittler and Fried combined for 12 1/3 innings, or 37 outs, while allowing one earned run.

Calculated from their reported pitching lines, that equals a 0.73 ERA. Schlittler supplied 19 outs and Fried supplied 18. Those totals paired an internally developed starter with a veteran acquired through free agency.

The calculation describes two games, not a forecast. It nevertheless identifies a measurable contribution from both development and spending to the Yankees’ advancement.

Tierney argues development deserves recognition

Brandon Tierney argued after Game 1 that the Yankees’ development successes deserved recognition. Discussing the players behind the win, he said:

“Because everywhere you looked, it was somebody that his organization drafted and his organization developed.”

Tierney credited Schlittler, Rice and Lombard while acknowledging Damon Oppenheimer and the scouts who identified Schlittler at Northeastern. He said criticism involving Jasson Domínguez and Anthony Volpe should not eclipse those successes.

He maintained his earlier criticisms but urged a reassessment of the Yankees’ results, saying:

“But you’ve got to give credit where it’s due and how things are shifting and they’re shifting.”

Tierney also praised Cashman’s combative interview responses. Contrasting them with Mets executive David Stearns’ recent press conference, he imagined a tougher radio interrogation through wrestling comparisons. Of Cashman’s willingness to push back, Tierney said:

“It’s fun and I really respect that. He’s a scrapper.”

Tierney then imagined Cashman answering critics after Game 1. This was Tierney’s characterization, not a reported Cashman statement:

“Last night was a night where Cashman’s saying bleep you. Bleep you.”

Cole’s endorsement came after the Yankees completed the series, adding a player’s assessment to that debate. As of Oct. 1, the Yankees had advanced to face the Rays, with Cashman’s roster heading into another round and its contributions receiving recognition inside the clubhouse.
