Derek Jeter’s 2,000th-hit baseball goes for auction, but surprise price undercuts Yankees hype

NEW YORK — A piece of Derek Jeter history has returned to the memorabilia market, carrying a price estimate that may catch Yankees collectors by surprise.

A baseball authenticated as having been used during the May 26, 2006 game in which Jeter collected his 2,000th career hit was listed by Mynt Auctions through LiveAuctioneers.

Jeter signed the baseball across the sweet spot.

The auction house placed an estimated value of $1,261 to $1,639 on the item, with bidding opening at $100. The final price was $1230.

For a baseball tied to one of the defining statistical milestones of Jeter’s Hall of Fame career, the relatively modest estimate immediately stands out.

There is, however, an important distinction.

The available authentication identifies the baseball as having been used during Jeter’s 2,000th-hit game. It does not establish from the information publicly displayed with the listing that this was the exact baseball the captain hit for career knock No. 2,000.

Baseball carries MLB and Steiner authentication

The listing describes the item as an official Major League baseball from the Yankees’ May 26, 2006 game against the Kansas City Royals at the old Yankee Stadium.

According to the auction information, MLB authentication hologram BB024315 confirms the ball was used during that game.

The item also comes with a letter of authenticity from Steiner Sports.

Jeter’s signature appears in faded blue ink across the sweet spot.

The baseball shows visible signs of game use, including dirt, abrasions and scuffing.

That distinction matters to collectors.

A baseball actually struck by Jeter for hit No. 2,000 would carry a different level of provenance from another authenticated ball that entered play during the same game.

The auction title promotes the item using Jeter’s 2,000th-hit milestone, while the detailed provenance identifies it as a baseball used during the milestone game.

Jeter reached 2,000 in classic fashion

Jeter entered that May night already established as one of the most accomplished players of his generation.

Then he reached another benchmark.

Facing the Royals at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees captain collected career hit No. 2,000 on a softly hit ball in front of home plate.

MLB still preserves video of the milestone.

The achievement placed another marker on a career that would eventually finish with 3,465 hits — the most in Yankees history.

The night itself did not end the way Jeter or the Yankees wanted.

Kansas City defeated New York 7-6, snapping a 13-game losing streak. The Yankees fell to 26-20 despite collecting 12 hits.

Jeter’s individual achievement nevertheless became the lasting historical event from the game.

A modest estimate for a major Yankees milestone

The financial side makes the newly listed baseball particularly interesting.

Mynt Auctions estimated the item between $1,261 and $1,639.

That figure is notable when viewed against the premium frequently attached to Jeter memorabilia connected to major career moments.

A pair of Jeter’s game-used cleats attributed to the same May 26, 2006 game sold for $6,765 in a 2026 Robert Edward Auctions sale.

Those cleats carried inscriptions referencing the 2,000th-hit game and documentation from MEARS, JSA and Steiner.

The comparison illustrates just how much memorabilia valuations depend on provenance, type of item and the strength of the documented connection to a milestone.

Even items associated with the same night can occupy dramatically different portions of the market.

The same authenticated ball has appeared on memorabilia market

Hologram BB024315 is not appearing publicly for the first time.

A memorabilia dealer previously offered a Jeter-signed baseball carrying that same MLB hologram and described it as a ball used during the May 26, 2006 game.

That listing priced the item at $995.

Its resurfacing through an auction setting now provides another test of how collectors value a game-used baseball connected to one of Jeter’s landmark nights.

The auction estimate could prove conservative if competing Yankees collectors become involved.

It could also reinforce the importance of the exact wording contained in an item’s authentication.

Jeter memorabilia retains unusual Yankees pull

Few retired Yankees generate the consistent memorabilia attention Jeter still commands.

The former captain played his entire 20-year career in pinstripes, won five World Series championships and became the franchise leader in hits.

He also finished with 14 All-Star selections and entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020.

That history has created an enormous collector market ranging from inexpensive signed pieces to elite game-used equipment with five-figure values.

This baseball occupies a fascinating place within that spectrum.

It does not need to be identified as the exact ball from hit No. 2,000 to carry a direct connection to an important night in Yankees history.

The MLB hologram links it to the game.

Jeter’s signature links it to the player.

Now the auction market will decide what that combination is worth.
