NEW YORK — The Yankees spent much of the winter trying to make sure Cody Bellinger would still be in the middle of their lineup when October arrived. The negotiation stretched into a second month. New York held firm at five years while Bellinger’s camp pushed for a longer commitment. The sides finally settled on a five-year, $162.5 million contract with two player opt-outs in late January.

That deal was never only about regular-season production. Bellinger had already given the Yankees 29 home runs, 98 RBIs and defensive flexibility in 2025. The larger question was whether the investment would matter when the margin for error disappeared and the Yankees needed one swing to change a postseason game.

That moment arrived Wednesday night with New York protecting a 2-1 lead over the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. A tight Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series broke open with a six-run sixth inning. The Yankees won 9-2, completed a two-game sweep and advanced to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Division Series. Max Fried earned the win after allowing one run on three hits over six innings. Sonny Gray took the loss after giving up two runs over 4 2/3 innings.

Bellinger had already helped. After grounding out in his first two at-bats, he delivered a two-out RBI single off left-hander Erik Miller in the fifth to make it 2-0. Aaron Boone trusted him against same-side pitching, and the Yankees wanted his bat for matchup-heavy October baseball.

The 2026 regular season was not a repeat of Bellinger’s first Yankees season. He finished with 17 home runs and 73 RBIs in 132 games, and a hamstring injury interrupted his summer after he earned All-Star Game MVP honors. Still, the Yankees’ pursuit was about more than a home-run total. It was about having a proven hitter in the exact spot Boston was about to force him into.

Yankee Stadium turns Boston’s gamble into defining swing

With two outs in the sixth, Trent Grisham on second and the Yankees ahead 5-1, Boston intentionally walked Ben Rice. Garrett Whitlock would face Bellinger instead.

The choice lasted two pitches. Whitlock missed with a changeup, then left another changeup over the plate. Bellinger lifted it 360 feet to right-center for a three-run homer that pushed the Yankees ahead 8-1 and effectively ended Boston’s season.

The twist made the swing even more Yankee-specific. The reported ballpark projection said the drive would not have cleared the fence in any other MLB stadium. Yankee Stadium was the only park where it played as a home run.

The Yankees had spent weeks negotiating to keep a left-handed hitter whose swing fit their home park. In the biggest game of his new contract so far, those dimensions turned a borderline drive into the knockout blow.

Bellinger was ready for intentional walk

Boston bypassed Rice after he went 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs in Game 1. Bellinger said he was not offended because hitting behind Aaron Judge had prepared him for that situation.

“I had a feeling that they might do that,” Bellinger said. “I think when you hit behind [Aaron] Judge so often, you just get used to it.”

Bellinger also understood why Boston wanted no part of Rice, who had singled earlier in Game 2.

“He’s been red-hot, and it was in the back of my mind,” Bellinger said. “You never really know.”

The Yankees did not need Bellinger to interpret the move as disrespect. They needed him to punish it. His swing did exactly that.

“He’s built for this,” Aaron Judge told. “He’s built for New York. He’s built for the big moment. And he continues to show up for us when we need him.”

Four RBIs carried outsized weight in a one-sided series

Bellinger finished 2-for-5 with four RBIs, and every RBI came with two outs. That production alone was twice Boston’s entire run total in the two-game series. The Red Sox scored only twice while the Yankees scored 18.

The four-RBI night also changed the frame around Bellinger’s 2026 season. His regular-season power dipped from 29 home runs in 2025 to 17 this year, but his October value arrived through leverage. One two-out single created separation. One two-out homer turned separation into a rout.

Bellinger owns a career .268 average against left-handed pitching. Boston went to Miller in the fifth anyway, and Bellinger lined the RBI single. The Red Sox then tried Whitlock in the sixth and got the same result in a louder form.

Bellinger said there was no complicated formula behind that success.

“No secret sauce. For me, just take it as another at-bat. Felt like when I was playing baseball coming up, didn’t hear too much about the match-ups. I was just playing baseball,” Bellinger said.

The Yankees’ winter priority now has an October receipt

Before the game, Bellinger caught the ceremonial first pitch from his father, Clay, who played for the Yankees from 1999 through 2001 and was part of two World Series championship teams.

A few hours later, Bellinger had his own postseason moment in pinstripes. He enjoyed it but kept the focus on what remained.

“That was a cool moment, I felt like I was able to enjoy that one… just home game in Yankee Stadium, it’s a really fun atmosphere… hopefully we get many many more this month,” Bellinger said.

The Yankees now move from a two-game sweep to a best-of-five ALDS against Tampa Bay. Bellinger enters that series with the biggest swing of his Yankees postseason to date and the kind of October return New York spent much of the offseason trying to secure.
