The Yankees and starter Carlos Rodon have reached a consensus on a contract that will be worth $162 million over the course of six years, reported Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The Yankees have started talking with the left-handed star pitcher, who remained their top target after Aaron Judge.

The Yankees were looking to bolster the pitching department and Carlos Rodon, who is 30, was the best pitcher available as a free agent after others were signed. Before leaving the San Francisco Giants, the starter ended the 2022 season with 14-8 and had an ERA of 2.88. He made 31 starts and pitched 178 innings, which was a career high for him. He also made the All-Star team for the second year in a row in 2022.

Earlier it was reported that Carlos Rodon sought a contract with more than seven years and more than $200 million. Though the New York Yankees were hesitant to go that far, they were very serious and hopeful about this pursuit.

Even though Carlos Rodon had a good year with the White Sox, they did not re-sign him for the next season. He then signed a two-year deal with the Giants. It also gave him an opt-out clause that the starting pitcher preferred to exercise after the playoffs.

With Carlos Rodon, the Yankees’ rotation tops the chart

Last year, the Yankees’ rotation had the fourth-best ERA of all teams and it was led by Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes, and Luis Severino from the beginning. In August, another starter Frankie Montas joined the team though he had to go off the active roster a month later following a shoulder injury. Even though the Yankees had a rough second half, their ranking didn’t show it, because the Houston Astros beat them out of the playoffs.

With Carlos Rodon in, Fangraphs put the Yankees’ rotation at no. 1 ahead of the Mets.

The deal, which was first reported by the New York Post, is the latest for agent Scott Boras, who is once again having a good offseason. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe has claimed that “the superagent locked up the deal for Carlos Rodon and the Yankees while he was at Fenway Park with his client Masataka Yoshida, who was being officially introduced as the new Red Sox outfielder.”

According to research by ESPN Stats & Information, Carlos Rodon’s contract is the Yankees’ second-biggest contract with a pitcher in terms of the total value. Only Cole’s $324 million deal in 2019 is bigger. Rodon’s contract is worth $162 million, which is $1 million more than CC Sabathia‘s deal with the Yankees in 2008.

Once the Yankees started looking to Nathan Eovaldi as a backup if Rodon didn’t agree to their offer.

Cole can’t opt out until 2025 while Nestor Cortes will be with the Yankees until 2026. Luis Severino and Frankie Montas have a season to play. When Carlos Rodon joins them, the Yankees have the most-prized rotation in the MLB.
